The council of federation has passed a decision to organize the new region.
The FDRE council of federation has held its 6th parliamentary term, 2nd year working term, 2nd regular assembly. It has passed a decision to be organized as a new 12th region with the name «South Ethiopia Peoples Region» that includes ethnicities, nationalities and peoples.
Following the referendum made by the nations, nationalities and peoples of six zones and five different districts, ethnicities and peoples that previously resided in the southern regions, nationalities and people, the council of federation has decided to organize in one region based on the resolution of nations, nationalities, and peoples to be organized in one region.
The newly organized under the title «Region of Southern Ethiopia» are Wolayita, Gamo, Gofa, Gedio, South Omo, Konso zones and Derashe, Burji, Amaro, Ale and Basketo special districts.
Hadiya, Halaba, Kembata Tembero, Silte, Gurage zones and Yem Special Woreda tribes, nations and peoples will continue in the region.
The information from the council of federation indicates that the speaker of the assembly Mr. Agnehu Teshager has proposed to approve the resolution with full votes.
